How do I import a video from Files

How do I import a video from Files?

You can import video files stored on your device, an external drive, or cloud storage into Smooth Operator. This guide covers importing from your file system.

Supported formats

Smooth Operator can import any video format that Apple's AVFoundation can read. This includes:

If a file is not a valid playable video, the app will show the error: "The selected file is not a valid video."

Importing on iOS

  1. Open the Import sheet by tapping the "+" button on the Projects screen.
  2. In the "Import From" picker, select "Files."
  3. Tap "Select Video File." The iOS file browser opens.
  4. Navigate to your video file and select it.
  5. The app verifies the file is playable and returns to the Import sheet.
  6. Optionally, attach a motion.json file by tapping "Attach motion.json."
  7. Enter a project name (or keep the auto-suggested name).
  8. Tap the import/confirm button.

Importing on Mac

  1. Click the "+" button or use the menu command File → Import Video... (Cmd+I).
  2. In the "Import From" picker, select "Files."
  3. Click "Select Video File." A Finder open panel appears.
  4. Choose your video file (single selection only).
  5. Optionally, attach a motion.json file by clicking "Attach motion.json..."
  6. Enter a project name.
  7. Click Import.

You can also drag and drop a video file from Finder directly onto the Smooth Operator window. The file will be copied to a temporary location and imported.

Importing a Smooth Operator bundle

If you have a folder that contains both a video.mov and a motion.json file (a Smooth Operator bundle), you can select the folder itself when importing. The app detects the bundle structure and extracts both files automatically.

What happens after import
